Here it is – my top 50 favorite albums of 2013 with the usual SONGbiscuit slant towards Americana, Roots, Folk, and Indie music from Ireland, England, Scotland, Texas, Tennessee and beyond.
All of these albums deserve your attention, so I urge you to not dwell too much upon the specific rankings. In fact, the deeper into the list you get, the more arbitrary the rankings become.
The album titles link to iTunes, or to alternate sites where you can pick up a few of the albums that aren’t yet officially released in the USA.
At the bottom of this post, there is a Spotify playlist consisting of my favorite song from each album. Seriously, friends. You need to hear this playlist that I’ve made for you. I guarantee you’ll find some new favorite artists.
Before every vacation I take, I like to immerse myself in songs by bands from the destination’s music scene. Although I do include classics in my listening, I prefer to focus on new music. My destination-focused playlists within the past year or so have included loads of amazing new music from Nashville, Austin, Hawaii, and Denver.
This time around, the focus is on the incredible music currently coming out of Ireland and Scotland. I’ve shared my main playlist below, featuring 70 songs – 35 by Irish bands and 35 by Scottish bands. To maximize variety, no band has more than one song on the playlist, although some vocalists may be featured more than once under a different band name or project. Many of the songs were released within the past year, while none are more than a few years old.
I start the playlist with my favourite Irish rockers The Riptide Movement before closing out the Irish 35 with the deadly rock of The Minutes. The Scottish 35 starts with a bagpipe-inflused tune by the widely known Biffy Clyro and closes with my newest favourite band from any destination, Admiral Fallow.
Both portions of the playlist feature many excellent emerging artists alongside singles by better known bands. I hope you’ll give the playlist a good listen or two, perhaps while sipping on some fine distilled beverages from each country.
For maximum effectiveness, be sure to switch from Irish whiskey to Scottish whisky between The Minutes and Biffy ;-D
It’s that time again! On the 5th of every month, I refresh my massively amazing playlist known as SONGbiscuit 555. If you missed it, you can learn more about the project here. This month, I refreshed the list with 25 songs including some classic Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and Mazzy Star as well as some brand new music from The Jim Jones Revue, Leftover Cuties, Buddy Guy and a slew of other great artists. If ya dig it, subscribe to or follow the playlist on Spotify or rdio!
